The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Delta Omega Omega and Alpha Rho Chapters, will host “AKA Day at the Movies” with a special showing of Hidden Figures.
The event will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Pines Mall Theaters. The cost is $8 per person which includes admission, popcorn and a drink.
“This event will feature the movie: Hidden Figures which recounts the untold story of three brilliant African-American women who worked at NASA —- Katherine Johnson, portrayed by Taraji P. Henson, Dorothy Vaughan (1910-2008), portrayed by Octavia Benjamin, and Mary Jackson (1921-2005) portrayed by Janelle Monae,” a spokesman said in a news release.
“Each Hidden Figure is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. These ladies were the mathematical brains behind the launching by NASA of astronaut John Glenn into orbit as they worked in the segregated section of the Langley Research Center. Hidden Figures has received great reviews from critics,” the spokesman said.
President Barack Obama awarded Katherine G. Johnson with the Medal of Congressional Honor in 2015. She also received the Septima Poinsette Award during the 2016 Mid–Atlantic Regional Conference at Atlanta, Georgia, the spokesman said.
President Damiccah Robertson and the Sisterly Relations Committee of Delta Omega Omega Chapter invites the Pine Bluff community, families, students, and friends to join them at the movie. Details: Damiccah Robertson, firstname.lastname@example.org.
