The Greater St. Marion District Ushers Ministry will host a seminar about active shooters, safety and security in churches, according to spokeswoman.

Presented by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the session will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1801 Indiana St.

The opening session starts at 10:30 a.m. with the sheriff’s office conducting training to apply the concepts of ADD (Avoid, Deny, and Defend), a civilian response to active shooter events.

According to a press release, participants will be taught about paying attention to their surroundings, having an exit plan, moving away from the source of a threat as soon as possible and other concepts to be safe.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. The seminar is free and open to the public.

The Rev. Charles Helloms is the moderator of the Greater St. Marion District. Lillie Ventress is the president of the district ushers. The Rev. Harold Shirlee is pastor of Pleasant Grove church.
