Our heads are spinning. There is so much misinformation circulating regarding the Go Forward Pine Bluff initiative, and it’s unfortunate that many people believe it.

Heck, even one of our own city aldermen, Steven Mays, is calling Go Forward a Ponzi scheme on social media. Nothing could be further from the truth. And, frankly, we are embarrassed for the people who believe such nonsense. Alderman Mays, the definition of a Ponzi scheme is as follows: It is a fraudulent investment operation where the operator, an individual or organization, pays returns to its investors from new capital paid to the operators by new investors, rather than from profit earned through legitimate sources.

To compare the good folks who worked so hard on this plan to criminals is shameful. Perhaps if Alderman Mays and other council members who are against Go Forward would stop concentrating on the Pine Bluff/White Hall ZIP code issue (which is made up of even more bologna than an Oscar Mayer factory) they would have time to study the plan and speak about it with knowledge in hand.

If you are against it, fine. Just don’t be against it because of misinformation. And stop spreading said misinformation, please. If the five-eighths cent sales tax passes on June 13, the City Council will control the approval and disbursement of all revenues generated by the tax.

Let’s say that again.

If the five-eighths cent sales tax passes on June 13, the City Council will control the approval and disbursement of all revenues generated by the tax.

One more time for those who comprehend slowly.

If the five-eighths cent sales tax passes on June 13, the City Council will control the approval and disbursement of all revenues generated by the tax.

That’s a fact. There is no fraud being committed here.

That means you and your fellow aldermen, Mr. Mays, will control those funds. How exactly is that a Ponzi scheme? The private money and grant funds will be used to pay for activities in the Plan that Go Forward cannot use tax money to complete. For example, private monies and grants would be used to support efforts for our public schools, various incentives, etc.

Those are the funds that will be controlled by Go Forward.

We cringe each time we log on to social media and read people’s comments comparing Go Forward to the mafia or some other sinister group “out to get” the residents of Pine Bluff. Is the Go Forward plan perfect? No. No plan is or would ever be. In fact, we have some ideas we would have like to see included in the Go Forward plan.

Those ideas will run in this space in the coming days. That said, we are still supportive of the plan and wish that those who aren’t would stop spreading nonsense. It only makes them look foolish.
