A $500,000 bond was set Thursday for a Pine Bluff man accused of beating another man who later died. Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Allen Claggett, 43, with first-degree murder.

Claggett is accused of beating and then stomping Henry L. Johnson Jr., 57, when Johnson intervened while Claggett was hitting his sister during an altercation on June 2. Johnson died Tuesday. According to a Pine Bluff Police Department report, Claggett accused Johnson of beating his sister, Nancy Claggett, and when his sister said that Johnson had not beaten her, Allen Claggett became upset and started hitting her with his fists.

Pine Bluff Detective Jeremy Oswalt reported that Allen Claggett hit Johnson several times in the face after Johnson tried to intervene, knocking Johnson to the ground and then began stomping Johnson with his foot. Nancy Claggett said she ran outside to call for help and her brother made her come back in, and several hours after the incident, Johnson began vomiting and having a seizure and she called an ambulance.

Medical personnel at the scene said Johnson had massive head injuries and he was immediately taken to a Little Rock hospital for treatment. Allen Claggett had left the scene before police arrived and was arrested later. This was the 12th homicide reported in Pine Bluff so far this year, two more than were reported all of last year.
