Watson Chapel Junior High School recently announced winners of the “Design Your Dream Home” competition. Eighth grade students and math educator Cedric Jackson presented the project.

The first place trophy winner and $55 was awarded to Hannah McCullough. The second place trophy winner and $40 was awarded to Neveah Love. The third place trophy winner and $30 was awarded to Will Rodgers Jr. The runner-up, Colton Edwards, received a medallion and $20.

“As part of the ‘Design Your Dream Home’ competition, the students had to be creative with their project and display mathematical dimensions of the total square footage of their dream home,” according to a news release. “In addition, students had to display square footage of different rooms in their dream home by converting measurements from inches to feet using their own scale factor.”

The event began when several students approached Jackson about a dream home project he talked to the students about toward the end of the school year. He and several students came up with a quick fundraiser to pay for trophy purchases and cash prizes for the winners.

Jackson thanked all the contestants and the donors in the Pine Bluff/White Hall community who helped make this event a great success, he said in the release.

Judges included Mayor Shirley Washington of Pine Bluff; Curtis Marks, building superintendent of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department; David Davis, owner of True Home Care; Celeste Alexander, mathematics professional development specialist in the STEM Pre-College Center at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; Marchello Eans, art educator at Watson Chapel Junior High School; Varnette Bruce, K-12 math specialist for Watson Chapel School District; and Troy and Kristy Philbrook, Arkansas Realtors and owners of The Property Shop of Arkansas in Pine Bluff.

Trophies were designed by Southeast Engravers of Pine Bluff.
