Bethany Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 1923 S. Olive St., will host a free community health fair and back-to-school supply giveaway. The public is invited to the event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5.

The health fair will include a free electrocardiogram (EKG), HIV testing, a blood draw for prostate screening, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings, sickle cell anemia information, organ donor information, sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention and detection. People who are screened will receive confidential charts and exit counseling, according to the release.

“The goal is to help our community by being preventive and proactive,” a spokeswoman said. “If we are able to diagnose existing or possibly future problems, we are saving our community thousands, possibly millions of dollars later in health care.”

This is the second year that Bethany Chapel has been the host. The plan is to make this an annual event. The health fair and school supply giveaway is made possible through donations from community members.

The health fair will be conducted by Kay Long, event chairwoman and health chairwoman of the Pine Bluff Branch of the NAACP, along with other professionals.

Participating organizations include the NAACP, Epsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Pine Bluff Branch of the National Association of University Women, Jefferson County Health Department, Jefferson Comprehensive Care System, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Nursing Department, Arkansas Heart Hospital, Department of Human Services and ARORA (Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency.)
