There was a major misunderstanding that occurred during this past weekend’s game at War Memorial Stadium between Southern University and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as the national anthem was not played prior to the game. UAPB’s Sports Information department released a statement Monday addressing the matter.
“The playing of the national anthem was a fixture on the written pregame itinerary as always, but that itinerary wasn’t followed. Both the bands and the teams somehow deviated from the script in the moments leading to kickoff.
"Consequently, at the designated start time for the game when the officials waved for play to start, the opportunity to play the anthem had expired.”
John Graham, director of UAPB’s marching band, said he and his staff members were waiting for the official cue to begin playing, but it never came.
“We always have played it prior to the game,” Graham said. “We looked for the flag to go on the field, and nothing ever happened. It was just one of those things, some kind of mix up.”
