At about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, Pine Bluff police officers responded to a pedestrian accident on Martha Mitchell Expressway between University Avenue and Willow Street.

At this time, the investigation indicates 45-year-old Dewayne Jackson was walking west in the traffic lane with his back to traffic, Officer Richard Wegner said in a press release. Jackson was struck by a 1999 Nissan Maxima that was traveling west in the same lane. Within moments, Jackson was struck a second time by another vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:25 a.m. by Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley. Kelley listed the cause of death as multiple blunt force trauma and said the body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office later Wednesday for an autopsy.

Following the investigation, Wegner said the driver of the Nissan, 22-year-old Nia Blade, was arrested for DWI, driving on a suspended driver’s license and no proof of insurance. She was also arrested on probable cause of negligent homicide.

A case file is being prepared and will be forwarded to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office once it is complete. Blade was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Wednesday morning.

No charges are expected against the driver of the second vehicle, Wegner said in the press release.
