Watson Chapel closed out the regular season Friday night by winning the 5A South conference title outright by defeating Camden Fairview 39-14.
The win also gave the ‘Cats an undefeated record at 7-0 in the conference. The Cardinals kept the game close early by pulling to within 9-7 on an 86-yard touchdown pass from Keith Johnson to Quaishun Thompson.
Johnson would finish with two scoring passes and 260 yards of passing, but the Wildcat defense only allowed 58 yards on the ground. Two interceptions thrown by Johnson also kept Camden Fairview (4-6, 4-3 5A South) in check.
Chapel got the early lead and never trailed when Devin Curry scored from four yards out midway through the first. The PAT was no good by Keandre Kendal, but he redeemed himself with 2:06 to go in the quarter when he hit a 23-yard field goal that was set up by a blocked punt by the ‘Cats defense.
Omar Allen would score the first of his two touchdowns on the night on a five-yard run in the second. Kendal added the two-point conversion for a 17-7 Wildcat lead. Curry would hit Jalen R. Williams with a 44-yard touchdown pass with 6:27 left to go in the half, and after Allen ran in the conversion, Watson Chapel would lead 25-7 going into the break.
Both teams started the second half sluggish, as Curry would throw his first pick of the year to end the starting drive. It wouldn’t be until early in the fourth quarter before Allen would get his second score on a four-yard run.
Deonte Cooper would add to the scoring for Watson Chapel (8-2, 7-0 5A South) with 4:04 to go in the game on his only touch of the night. That run went for 75-yards on the first play of Chapel’s last possession. Kendal would add both PAT’s for a 39-7 lead. Camden Fairview would get a meaningless touchdown with two seconds left in the game to make the final margin.
Watson Chapel begins a quest for a 5A title this Friday as they host the Morrilton Devil Dogs. The game can be heard locally on 98.1, the Hog.
