Janette Wheat of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has been appointed a site visitor for the Council for Accreditation for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Wheat is a UAPB Department of Human Sciences associate professor and Cooperative Extension Program human development and family studies specialist. She was appointed by Carol Anderson, AAFCS accreditation director.

The Council for Accreditation is the peer review board responsible for evaluating family and consumer sciences departments in higher education for their accreditation.

“Wheat will be responsible for evaluating the extent to which selected universities’ family and consumer sciences departments comply with AAFCS standards to ensure initial and continuing accreditation status,” according to a news release.

“Since 2015, Dr. Wheat has served on the AAFCS Council for Accreditation where she organized professional development activities and promoted the AAFCS accreditation program to undergraduate family and consumer science programs that could be eligible for accreditation,” according to the release.

Wheat was accreditation director for the UAPB Department of Human Sciences between 2008 and 2012 and interim department chair 2013-2014.

“Her leadership helped secure the department’s reaccreditation by AAFCS through 2022,” Anderson said.

Wheat has served as the second vice chair for the Assembly Units for AAFCS and is the immediate past state president of the Arkansas Affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

“My previous experience as accreditation director for the department and the systemic training I received from participating in several national AAFCS accreditation workshops has prepared me to make meaningful contributions to AAFCS-CFA,” Wheat said.

“Family and consumer sciences, originally home economics, provides the essential skills, research and knowledge to help people make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships and resources for an optimal quality of life,” according to the release.
