The Watson Chapel Lady Wildcats opened up their season against the Jacksonville Lady Titans in the first round of the Mount St. Mary Academy’s Heavenly Hoops tournament. The Lady Wildcats earned a 41-33 victory over the Lady Titans.

Senior forward Jerica Bell did not play due to a minor injury. Bell was the second leading scorer and also had the third most rebounds in a state title game with 18 points and 19 rebounds. The reigning 5A state champions got off to a slow start, only leading 10-6 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Watson Chapel started off to a 5-0 run with five straight points from senior guard T’aja Williams.

The Lady Wildcats held the lead 18-14 at halftime and started the second half with a faster pace with the first two scores. However, Jacksonville had a run of it’s own to cut the deficit 22-21. With a 29-24 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, sophomore guard Wyvette Mayberry paced the way with five points.

Sophomore forward Taylor Whitted and senior forward Desiree Warfield contributed in the fourth quarter as well. All three players combine for 12 of Watson Chapel’s 13 fourth quarter points to control the rest of the game for a victory.

Mayberry led all scorers with a game-high of 11 points. Whitted and Jakhiyah Boston added six points a piece. The Lady Wildcats will resume tournament play on Wednesday against the Star City Lady Bulldogs in the semi-final game.
