The Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association will convene its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 West Third Avenue. The host for the luncheon meeting will be the JCRTA Legislative Committee with Charles Bruce, chairperson.
The JCRTA 2017-2018 operational theme is “Go Forward…Retirees.”
“It’s befitting that teachers provide pathways for leadership by setting examples making a difference in the lives of others,” a news release said.
“An educated community is a progressive community thus it is imperative that illiterate rates be reduced, skills and innate abilities be developed where one can become employable, contribute to economic development and improve the quality of life in the community. With a trainable workforce business and industry will be encouraged to invest in a community having a forward outlook.”
Pine Bluff Mayor Shirley Washington is a distinguished member of the JCRTA. According to the release, Washington will issue a proclamation declaring November as National Parental Engagement Month and Thursday, Nov. 16, as National Parental Engagement Day in the city of Pine Bluff.
This is an effort encouraging parents and guardians to remain actively engaged in the education of their children. Teachers can provide the pathways of the learning process but to develop the pupil holistically the parent must be involved, e.g. be a role model parent.
The mayor’s office recently coordinated a Military Veterans Information Fair at the Convention Center. There were specific booths encouraging veterans to take advantage of their educational benefits and utilize their military occupation specialty (MOS).
The JCRTA Legislative Committee encourages the membership to become familiar with the legislative process. Legislatively, as observed in the Notebook Section of the Pine Bluff Commercial newspaper, daily listings of city, state, and federal representatives for direct contact, JCRTA members are encouraged also to participate with the silver haired legislators to enhance lobbing efforts.
The JCRTA monthly meeting of December 2017 and January 2018 will in in abeyance. JCRTA will reconvene Feb. 15, 2018 at the same place, same time.
