MONTICELLO — Paced by Abby Searcy of Monticello and Jessica Rowland of Bonnerdale, the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s rodeo team won last week’s Southern Arkansas University Rodeo in Magnolia.


Searcy won the barrel racing competition while Rowland and Ashley Newcomb of Royal swept the first two places in goat tying to lead the UAM women to a competition-best 550 points. Missouri Valley finished a distant second with 325 points, followed by Southern Arkansas with 190, Tennessee-Martin with 150, West Alabama with 140, Pearl River (Miss.) Community College with 115, and East Mississippi Community College with 70.


UAM’s Corie Vaughan of Searcy added 30 points in barrel racing while Madison Webb of Glenwood and Rowland each placed among the leaders in breakaway roping. In team roping, which features both male and female competitors, UAM’s Whitney DeSalvo of Springfield and Newcomb competed with DeSalvo scoring 60 points.


The UAM men’s team finished fifth out of nine competing schools. Missouri Valley won the men’s competition, followed by SAU, Pearl River CC, Tennessee-Martin, UAM, East Mississippi CC, West Alabama, Three Rivers College, and Northwest Mississippi CC.


Jace Woods of Conway paced the UAM men with a second place finish in calf roping.
