The Pine Bluff Zebra boys basketball team won in their season debut against the El Dorado Wildcats by a score of 94-64 on Tuesday.

The two teams met in the semi-finals of the 6A state tournament, where El Dorado took a huge 84-42 win over the Zebras.

In the first quarter of play, both teams got off to a good start as they traded baskets back and forth.

El Dorado led after the first quarter 18-17, but the Zebras heated up in the second quarter. Kaleb Higgins shot a few three point baskets to get the Zebras going.

After a 5-0 run by El Dorado, Lonnie Walker came off the bench for Pine Bluff and scored eight straight points to add to their lead.

Pine Bluff took a 49-31 lead over the Wildcats at halftime. Higgins had 17 points in the first half while combining with Walker for 20 of the Zebras' 31 points in the second quarter.

After halftime, the Zebras picked up where they left off as Higgins and Tyler Reynolds both made three-point shots to highlight an 11-3 run. However, foul trouble would slow the Zebras down. Higgins and Reynolds both fouled out midway through the third quarter.

Justin Tillar and Darius Morris took control of the game for the Zebras in the second half.

With the Zebras leading 73-55 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, El Dorado started the quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit.

Morris and Tillar would then trade baskets to spark a 9-0 run for the Zebras. The Zebras outscored the Wildcats 21-9 in the final quarter, while Morris and Tillar combined for 29 second-half points.

Higgins led the Zebras with 22 points. Morris contributed with 20 points and eight rebounds, and Tillar finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals.

The Zebras get a break from the season and will resume on Saturday, Nov. 25, against Conway.


The Pine Bluff Fillies basketball team fell to the El Dorado Lady Wildcats by a score of 51-31 in their home opener on Tuesday.

In the first quarter, El Dorado came out scoring as they went on a 5-1 run to start the game. However, the Fillies would cut the deficit after a 5-0 run of their own, sparked by a shot by Keirria Brice and a three pointer from Talah Hunter.

El Dorado would lead after the first quarter 13-8 before starting the second quarter on a 10-0 run to make the score 23-8. Pine Bluff would end the half on a 9-2 run, but the Lady Wildcats held a 25-17 lead at halftime.

The Fillies ended up in foul trouble, causing El Dorado to score from the free throw line. El Dorado outscored Pine Bluff in the second half 26-14 to help lead them to a victory.

Lydya Deshazier led the way for the Fillies with nine points and seven rebounds. Brice pitched in with six points and three steals.

The Pine Bluff Fillies will host the Little Rock Hall Warriors at 6 p.m. Thursday.
