Pine Bluff police are investigating a Thursday night murder that happened just south of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff campus.


A PBPD news release issued Friday said that at around 10:14 p.m. Thursday, they were notified of a person lying in the street near Vaugine and Hickory.


Near that intersection they found 46-year-old John Stepps lying close to his car. Stepps had suffered gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher at 11:46 p.m. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the upper body.


Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley said Friday the body has been sent to the State Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.
