Three University of Arkansas at Monticello debate team members won awards at the recent Deep South Debate Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi.

Kyle Hargis of Warren, a communication major, was named the first place speaker in the varsity debate division and reached the finals in varsity debate. Gabe McDorman of Sheridan, a communication major, also reached the finals of varsity debate. Brian Hunter Cook of Sheridan, a criminal justice major, was the fifth place speaker in junior varsity debate.

Others participating for UAM were Grace Nash, an English and modern languages major from Mount Holly, and Collin O’Connor, a psychology major from McGehee.

The tournament also included teams from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Bossier Parish Community College, Jackson State University, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi College, Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State, Stephen F. Austin State, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee and Union.
