Nicholas Romano has been appointed professor of aquaculture for the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In this position, he will develop a productive research program with an emphasis on emerging freshwater production technologies for catfish, as well as production techniques for other commercially viable fish species in Arkansas.


The UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Center provides research-based recommendations on aquaculture to the state’s aquaculture producers. Romano will be expected to produce recommendations that lead to farm-level adoption and innovation among Arkansas’ fish farmers.


He will also develop effective and engaging undergraduate and graduate courses in aquaculture, as well as mentor and advise students regarding careers in aquaculture.


“Dr. Romano brings an interesting international perspective to our program, having worked with many different aquatic species and systems,” Rebecca Lochmann, interim chair of the UAPB Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, said. “I am optimistic that his talents and experience will help the U.S. aquaculture industry become more profitable.”


Romano has a doctorate degree in aquaculture, a graduate diploma of research methods in aquaculture and a bachelor’s degree of aquaculture from the School of Tropical Marine Biology and Aquaculture at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia.


Prior to this position, he worked for the Aquaculture Department at the University Putra Malaysia in Serdang, Malaysia as a senior lecturer from 2013 to 2017, and as a post-doctoral researcher from 2011 to 2013. From 2008 to 2010, he was an aquaculture research assistant at James Cook University.


Romano’s research interests center on ways to develop and grow aquaculture more sustainably and cost-effectively. His research has included marine and freshwater aquaculture, pond and farm management, aquaculture engineering, breeding of fish and crustaceans, aquaponics, aquaculture nutrition and disease management.


He has authored and co-authored numerous scientific papers, manuscripts and journal articles. He currently serves as a peer reviewer and on the editorial boards for several scientific journals covering subjects such as aquaculture, fisheries science, biochemistry and physiology and environmental safety.


His professional affiliations include the Aquaculture Engineering Society, World Aquaculture Society, Asian Fisheries Society and Malaysian Fisheries Society.
