Watson Chapel School Board members voted unanimously to extend Superintendent Connie Hathorn’s contract for an additional year at a meeting held Monday night. Hathorn was hired July 1, 2015, on a contract that runs through June 30, 2018. Hathorn received an extension last year for an additional two years, which runs through 2020, and Monday night he received an additional year extension, which runs through 2021.
After an executive session, board member Ronnie Reynolds proposed the motion to extend the superintendent’s contract. Goldie Whitaker, another board member, seconded the motion, and the rest of the board voted in favor.
“I want to thank the board for believing in me and giving me one more year,” Hathorn said. “I enjoy working with everybody here. It is a team effort.” The board then thanked and showed appreciation for Hathorn.
In other district news, the Watson Chapel Jr. High Beta Team, under the leadership of Lillian Hemphill, was named Arkansas State Champions for the Spotlight at the Beta Convention. The awards were presented to the board at the meeting.
“Our Beta Club this year will be our largest induction class we’ve ever had at the school,” Hemphill said. “Currently, we have 160 students that are eligible for Beta Club.”
The board thanked Hemphill for the work she does and encouraged the team to keep up the good work. The Jr. Beta Team will be representing the state at the National Jr. Beta Convention June 13-16 in Savannah, Georgia.
The board also voted in favor of the expulsion of a Watson Chapel High School student for the remainder of the school year. The student is accused of student assault after being viewed on video stomping and kicking another student.
In other news, the Child Nutrition Department had received bids in response to an Invitation to Bid for Food Products, and the board voted in favor of approving Tankersley, Ben. E. Keith, Sysco and Pine Bluff Janitorial as vendors for the 2018-2019 school year.
During the executive session, the board also discussed employing one bus driver and two cafeteria substitutes.
