Friday marked the second inmate hanging death in less than a week at the Arkansas Department of Correction’s East Arkansas Unit in Brickeys.

According to an ADC news release, inmate Gavin Loverin was found hanging in a locked single-man cell at around 12:28 a.m. Friday. In a similar incident on Wednesday, the ADC said prison employees at Brickeys saw inmate Robert Ivy hanging in a locked single-man cell.

In both cases, according to the ADC, responding correctional officers and medical staff transported the men to the unit infirmary for emergency medical treatment, where both were pronounced dead.

The Arkansas State Police were immediately notified in both cases and responded to the unit, the ADC said. ASP will be conducting an investigation into the deaths, and the Department of Correction will be conducting internal investigations.

Ivy, 37, was serving a five-year sentence out of Stone County for possession of a controlled substance, the news release said. Lovrien, 38, was serving multiple sentences for domestic battery, theft of property, escape an being an habitual offender out of Sharp, Independence and Cross counties, according to ADC records.
