Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Delta Omega Omega Chapter, recently awarded $5,000 in scholarships to five high school graduates. Each graduate received a $1,000 scholarship and will attend the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for the 2018-2019 school year.
The recipients, their high schools, and planned college majors were: Morgan Hodges — Dollarway High School, nursing; Abigail Herrin — Watson Chapel High School, animal science; Crystal Barnes — Pine Bluff High School, biology, pre-med; Ma’Kaylah Blackston — Pine Bluff High School, nursing; and Corinne Ridgell — Warren High School, chemistry.
“The awarding of these scholarships fulfills in part the purpose of the sorority which is ‘to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind’,” according to a news release.
Marguerite Flannigan is president of AKA, Delta Omega Omega Chapter. Brenda Dixon is chairwoman of the scholarship committee with Mattie P. Collins as co-chairwoman.
