Representatives of 17 local churches attended a workshop at Damascus Missionary Baptist Church in observance of June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month.
Faith ambassadors in Pine Bluff are Joan Crater, the Rev. Tonya Boyce, Sarah Hardin, and Classie Green. Shirley Sanders, a bishop, is the local coordinator and Lynette Finley is the Arkansas Chapter Outreach Coordinator.
Local churches were asked to mark the observance by having congregations wear purple one Sunday.
“People facing Alzheimer’s and dementia often turn to their faith community for emotional and spiritual support,” according to a news release. “Over five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050. “
“The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is estimated to total $277 billion in 2018, increasing to $1.1 trillion by mid-century,” according to the release.
