Dr. Donzell Lee, Ph.D., formerly of Pine Bluff, was recently appointed interim president of Alcorn State University at Lorman, Miss.


Lee, provost of Alcorn State, was set to begin the new role July 1, according to the May 21 edition of The Clarion Ledger.


Alcorn President Alfred Rankins Jr. was named Mississippi’s commissioner of higher education, according to The Ledger.


Lee became provost in 2015 and had been vice provost and interim provost. He has been at Alcorn State for more than 35 years.


According to The Ledger, he was a music instructor in the fine arts department, director of the university’s honors program and its graduate dean.


Lee developed the first computer-assisted music instruction laboratory in Mississippi and helped begin international programs, according to The Ledger.


He was born and raised in Pine Bluff, according to his sister, Ethell Lee.
