Pine Bluff Northern fell to Crossett 7-2 Monday night in the championship game of the Jr. Babe Ruth 15U State Tournament at historic Taylor Field in Pine Bluff. Northern was able to fend off Crossett in the first game of the Monday doubleheader 7-5.
In the second game, Crossett jumped out to a 2-0 lead early with an RBI single in the first and third innings by Zeke Hopper.
Pine Bluff retaliated and tied the game up in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout by Randy Little Jr. and Cason Blunt scoring on a wild throw.
However, Hopper hit a three-RBI triple to break the tie, and Chase Golden singled in another run to close out a four-run inning for Crossett in the fourth.
Crossett scored another run in the sixth inning to put the game away and win the state championship.
Kelby Roberts started on the mound for Pine Bluff, allowing two hits and two runs. David Carroll relieved Roberts, allowing four hits while striking out two batters.
For Crossett, Golden got the win on the mound, allowing just three hits while striking out five batters.
Pine Bluff was led at the plate by Jacoby Bates with two hits.
Hopper led Crossett with three hits and five RBI’s in the game.
In the first game against Crossett Monday night, Little was walked in the first inning, and Blunt hit a single to score the runner to put Pine Bluff ahead 1-0 after one inning.
Golden and Brock Wright both scored a run for Crossett on errors to go ahead of Pine Bluff 2-1 after the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second, Curtis Standoak doubled and after stealing a base, Josh Howard sacrificed a pop fly to score a run and tie the game for Pine Bluff at 2-2.
Crossett would regain the lead in the next inning after Wright drove in two runs on a double to left field.
However, Zion Hill doubled to drive in a run for Pine Bluff in the third, and Jacoby Bates hit a two-RBI single in the fifth inning to give Pine Bluff a 5-4 lead.
Crossett tied the game in the sixth inning with a double that score a run by Kason Brooks, but David Carroll and Little both added an RBI to take a 7-5 lead and win the game.
For Pine Bluff, Blunt had five strikeouts in the game while allowing 3 hits, and Kelby Roberts relieved Blunt, allowing two hits while striking out one batter.
Jack Rice allowed six hits while striking out two batters in the loss for Crossett.
Golden led at the plate for Crossett with two hits and one RBI.
For Northern, Bates and Blunt both had two hits with two RBI’s.
