Hawley Memorial United Methodist Church to host the well known UAPB Vesper Choir on Oct. 7. Special to The Commercial


The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Vesper Choir will perform at Hawley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1575 Ridgway Road, at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.


“Start your holiday with this extraordinary choir, which performs across the United States and abroad,” according to a news release.


The community is invited to attend. Admission is free, however an offering will be accepted to help with the choir’s national and international travels.


“The 70-80 member select ensemble has a rich choral tradition that includes numerous performances on radio and television, as well as performances across the United States,” according to the release.


Directed by interim director Jerron Liddell and assisted by Andee Book, the Vesper Choir performance includes a varied program of classical choral masterpieces, spirituals, choral jazz, commercial music, contemporary choral compositions and gospel selections. Annually, the choir performs Handel’s “Messiah” with an orchestra, a tradition begun more than 60 years ago, according to the release.


“The Vesper Choir has performed with the Pine Bluff Symphony and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Annual spring tours have taken the Vesper Choir to performances in more than 20 states across the nation,” according to the release.


Performances have been held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Greenwich Village, the Atrium of Trump Tower, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at New York City, the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois, the Clinton School of Public Service and the Arkansas Educational Television Network, both at Little Rock.


International performances have included St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, and venues in Rome, Florence, Milan, and Spain.
