Here’s five things to do for fun this weekend


1. Attend a scholarship banquet. The Pine Bluff/Jefferson County University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff/AM&N Alumni Chapter will host its annual Harlon H. Jones Sr. Scholarship Banquet. The banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. In addition to giving away two $500 book scholarships, the alumni chapter will honor UAPB and community supporters — Lawrence Davis Jr., Fred Hartfield, Margaret Boyd-Owens, Margarette Williams and Ryan Watley. Tickets are $30 each and a table of eight will be $240. The chapter is also selling ad space for the souvenir booklet. 2. Workout. CrossFit 1210 at Pine Bluff is celebrating its first anniversary and plans to host the second annual "Murph Challenge" workout. The "Murph Challenge" WOD (workout of the day) will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at CrossFit 1210, 3200 Catalpa St. The "Murph Challenge" is named for the late Navy Lt. Michael Murphy, who killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. The event consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 air squats with a one-mile run at the end. Most athletes will perform this workout wearing a 20 pound vest or body armor. 3. Go to a dance showcase. Dancing With Purpose will host a showcase at 3 p.m. Saturday in The Pines mall food court area. Performers will include Ja’Won and Julia Bradley and Impact Dance Ministry. Jason Long, pastor of Faith Worship Center, will also speak. A registration table will be available for those who want to enroll in Dancing With Purpose summer classes. The event is free and open to the public.


4. Take a plane ride. Pilots of America will hold their 20th annual fly-in Friday through Sunday at Grider Field Pine Bluff Regional Airport. Pilots will host free airplane rides for youth each day at 3 p.m., weather permitting. Events include: Friday, 10:30 a.m., flour bomb drop competition; Saturday, 10:30 a.m., pilot proficiency and formation flying competition; Sunday, 9:30 a.m., balloon burst and spot landing competition. 5. Go for a swim. Pine Bluff Arsenal Recreation Services will open swimming pools at the Arsenal starting Memorial Day weekend. Hours are noon to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1-6 p.m. Sundays. Pool passes can be purchased at the Arsenal Recreation Services at building 16-310. Details: 540-3778.
