A Pine Bluff man who was shot on Christmas night has died and the suspect faces upgraded charges.

According to Pine Bluff Police Chief Jeff Hubanks, Marquez Strong, 21, died Tuesday at a Little Rock hospital where he had been in critical condition after being shot multiple times, including once in the head.

The suspect, Randy Carter, 22, had been facing charges of first-degree battery with aggravated assault, however Hubanks said charges are expected to be upgraded, pending a court appearance.

A $250,000 cash-only bond was set Monday for Carter. During the hearing, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said police were sent to 315 E. 21st Ave. Dec. 25, where they found Strong unresponsive on the porch.

A witness told police they had been outside with Carter having an altercation with him, then went into the house where Carter allegedly pointed a gun at the witness and made threats before going back outside.

Kizer said Strong was present and attempted to "deter Carter from any further activity" before the shooting.
