A 71-year-old England man was killed Wednesday morning in a farm-related accident on Quattlebaum Road near Sherrill.

Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley identified the victim as Waymon Ball, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:20 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher. The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office at Little Rock Wednesday afternoon for an autopsy.

Sheriff’s Department spokesman Major Lafayette Woods Jr. said Ball and another man, Donald French, also of England, were about to unload fertilizer from a tractor-trailer to a hopper when the accident occurred just before 9:30 a.m. at 143 N. Quattlebaum Road.

According to the report, Ball, who had driven the tractor-trailer, was on the ground behind the hopper, which was backing up at the time and was driven by French. Ball was giving directions to line the two vehicles up so that the fertilizer could be unloaded.

French reportedly lost sight of Ball and when he got out of the hopper and went to check, he found Ball under the rear passenger tire.

Woods said Ball told French to get the hopper off of him and according to the report, French pulled the hopper forward, resulting in additional injuries to Ball.

The incident is still under investigation by the sheriff’s department, Woods said.
