A multiple vehicle accident Monday afternoon on Interstate 530 had traffic backed up for more than a mile while police and firefighters worked to clear the scene.

State Police Lt. David Sims said the accident was reported at the entrance ramp to Exit 34, which is the U.S. 270/Sheridan Road exit.

He said one vehicle was towing a second vehicle when the second vehicle caught on fire and the driver of the first vehicle pulled off to the shoulder of the road to the right side.

At about the same time, a pickup truck was towing a trailer, followed by a passenger vehicle, when a second vehicle pulled in front of the truck, causing it to slam on its brakes, and the passenger vehicle that was behind the trailer hit it, causing the trailer to come unhooked.

Sims said the White Hall Volunteer Fire Department sent two trucks to put out the fire and the White Hall Police Department responded with several officers to assist State Troopers in directing traffic and trying to clear the scene.

"Any time we need assistance, they’re right there to help," Sims said about the involvement of the White Hall officers.

The multiple accident reports from the incident were not completed Monday afternoon and no names or damage estimates were immediately available.
