The Pine Bluff Corps of the Salvation Army was the beneficiary of a particularly generous Christmas Eve donor who anonymously slipped an item of jewelry into one of the group’s red kettles that was stationed in front of the Walmart Supercenter on South Olive Street in Pine Bluff.

"Someone folded a seven-diamond ring on a 14-karat gold band into a dollar bill and dropped it into the red kettle we had set up in front of the store’s main entrance," SA Captain David Leonard said. "It was the last kettle we picked up on Christmas Eve and was the last one that we counted."

Leonard said that the ring is the first high-dollar item he has had dropped into one of his red kettles.

"I have of course heard of other Salvation Army locations receiving things like this, such as what happened up in Conway this year with the gold donations," Leonard said. "But this is the first time for me personally. We are just so grateful that someone thought of us in this way."

Leonard said he plans to have the ring appraised to determine its value and then to sell it to raise funds for the work of the Salvation Army.

"I’m going to take it to Sissy’s Log Cabin and to one other jeweler to get two written estimates on its value," Leonard said. "We will most likely have a form of silent auction to allow people to bid on the ring."

Leonard said the bidding will likely begin in a week or so and then be open for 10 days.

"We will talk to our congregations about it and will also announce it at our Salvation Army Thrift Store at 2901 S. Catalpa St.," Leonard said.

"If anyone would like to call and leave us their name and contact number before we put out the starting bid they can call us starting this Thursday," Leonard said.

The number for the Salvation Army is 534-0504.

"If anyone would like to donate to us and to be able to list it on their 2013 taxes they just need to write a check by Dec. 31," Leonard said.

The address for the Salvation Army is 501 E. 12th Ave. in Pine Bluff.
