One man was shot during an alleged robbery attempt early Thursday in Wabbaseka and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.


Ricky McDowell, 55, was shot in the groin, according to a press release from Sheriff’s Major Lafayette Woods Jr. Sheriff’s deputies found him at about 1:25 a.m. near U.S. 79 North in Wabbaseka, where he had fled after the shooting. He was taken by ambulance to Jefferson Regional Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery and his last known condition was stable.


McDowell said he was the victim of an attempted robbery at his home at 300 S. First St. McDowell escaped through a bedroom window, crawled to the highway and flagged down an unknown motorist, who dialled 911.


McDowell said he did not know the shooter.
