A two-vehicle accident on U.S. 65 south of Pine Bluff early Friday morning sent two people to Jefferson Regional Medical Center and caused a major traffic backup.

Arkansas State Trooper Zac Varnell said Betty Beegle, 49, of the McGehee area was southbound when the Toyota Camry she was driving crossed the center turn lane and went into the northbound lane and into the path of an 18-wheeler driven by Brian Millsap, 36, of the Conway area.

Varnell said Millsap tried to avoid the collision but was unable to and the car hit the cab of the tractor-trailer head-on, then went under the cab where Beegle was trapped until rescue workers were able to cut her out of her vehicle.

Both Beegle and Millsap were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The accident was reported at 6:05 a.m. about a half-mile north of the Highway 81-65 junction.

Varnell said the accident is still under investigation and no citations have been issued.

Troopers were on the scene for about three and a half hours Friday morning, Varnell said.
