Two Pine Bluff women were arrested Thursday night after they allegedly left a 2-year-old child alone in a vehicle on the Walmart parking lot.

Nicole Benjamin, 26, the mother of the child, and Zykarah Benjamin, 19, were inside the store shopping when an off-duty police officer saw the child in the vehicle, Detective Chris Wieland said in a probable cause affidavit presented in court Monday.

The child waved to the officer from the vehicle, which had the windows rolled up and the doors unlocked, according to the affidavit, and after the officer was able to get the child, a search began inside the store for the owner of the vehicle.

Wieland said in the affidavit that Nicole Benjamin was located about 15 minutes later and allegedly told police she didn’t know the child was in the vehicle when she went to Walmart. She said she thought the child had stayed at a relative’s house when she had gone there before going to Walmart.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $5,000 bond Monday for both Nicole Benjamin and Zykarah Benjamin after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge them with one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.

The report did not indicate what happened to the child.
