Verle W. Shelby, 82, of the Woodlawn community, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2018. He was born January 5, 1936 in Lincoln County. Verle served in the Air Force for four years. He was a Baptist. He retired from the United States Postal Service. Mr. Shelby enjoyed reading, being outdoors, and being surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his father, Herbert Shelby; mother, Verda Puckett Shelby; sister, Eva Mae Rauls and son, Gary Shelby.


Survivors include his wife, Roberta Crutchfield Shelby; daughter, Rhonda Epnett and husband, Ray of Watson Chapel; daughter, Deborah Herring and husband, Don of Sheridan; son, Jeremy Shelby and wife, Stacy of Hot Springs; grandchildren, Steven (Heather) Waschalk, Josh (Karen) Waschalk, David (Jessica) Waschalk, Jamie Stewart, Miranda (Ernie) Hand, Ashleigh Shelby, Summer (Dillon) Sowrheaver, Lindsey Shelby, Abby Shelby; nine great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister, Imogene Gibson of Pansy; brother, J. H. (Rita) Shelby of Wilma and brother, Roger (Wanda) Shelby of Ruston, Louisiana.


Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Buie Funeral Home in Rison. Interment will follow at Macedonia Cemetery near Rison. Samuel Sinks, Jr.


Samuel M. Sinks, Jr. TSGT USAF (Ret.), age 83, of Rison, passed away at home after a long illness surrounded by his daughter, Debbie and two granddaughters, Melanie and Karla on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Mr. Sinks was born in Kingsland, Arkansas on June 12, 1935 to the late Samuel M. Sinks, Sr. and Pricilla Ivy (Oldner) Sinks. He was reared in Rison and Kingsland until age 17 and his 1952 enlistment in the Army National Guard until 1954 serving in Georgia, then enlisting into the United States Air Force in July of 1954. He served his country stateside and overseas to include a tour in Vietnam with the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1967, retiring from the military in 1974 while with the 410 Field Maintenance Squadron at KI Sawyer AFB, Michigan.


Upon retirement from military service he returned to Watson Chapel/Pine Bluff area and eventually settled in Rison in 1977. Mr. Sinks was very active and continued to work, including the US Postal System, the Watson Chapel School District as their Head Bus Mechanic until 1992, and a Volunteer Firefighter for the Y212/35 Fire Department of Rison and election poll booth worker for Cleveland County until age 79.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Darlene Jarrett Sinks who passed in 2001, his parents, six sisters, Louise Reed Doyle, Bernice Herb, Rosie Estes, Kathryn Taylor, Marianne Russ, Lorene Sanders and his brother James A. Sinks.


Mr. Sinks is survived by his four children, Sammy Sinks (Elizabeth) of Wimberley, TX, Jimmy Sinks (Marsha) of Cabot, AR, Debbie Sinks of Rison, AR, and Cathy Robinson (David) of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Harrell (James) of Pine Bluff, AR, and Corrine Nichols (Roland) of Hampton, AR, 10 grandchildren, Davona, Melanie, Karla, Dustin, Shaun, Jason D., Journey, Shianne, Aubrey and Pheonix as well as several great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews to mourn his passing.

Nita Bradshaw


Nita Bradshaw, 91, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, went to be with her heavenly Father on August 24, 2018.


She was born September 2, 1926, in Sondheimer, Louisiana to Walter and Jewel Smith Gresham.


She and her husband worked in the grocery business (Motorway Grocery) and farming.


They were blessed with two children, Sherry (John) Reed and Rickey (Bennie) Bradshaw all of White Hall; two grandchildren, Sean and Richard Reed; two great-grandchildren, Reiley and Jesse Reed.


Nita was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cecil Bradshaw, whom she married on February 19, 1943, in Fordyce; her parents; a brother, Truman Spencer and a sister Jackie Garcia.


Prior to her illness Nita was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where in past years she taught Bible studies and served on numerous boards. She also volunteered for many organization’s including JRMC, Shepherd Center where she served on the Board.


Nita and the love of her life, Cecil, traveled both home and abroad. After his death she continued to enjoy traveling with all her lady friends. She loved bridge with her “Monday Ladies”. Several years ago, she started playing Canaster again and thoroughly enjoyed that also.


The family now invites all her friends to help them celebrate her departure to her Heavenly Home where there is no sorrow, pain, worries or problems. There she and Cecil will await their loved ones still here on earth.


This celebration will be Wednesday, August 29, 2018, 11 AM, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend Stewart Marshall officiating. Visitation will be at 10 AM in the Fellowship Hall.


Private burial at Union Cemetery will follow.

Phillip Harvey


Phillip Dean Harvey, 67, of Little Rock, formerly of Magnolia, met his Lord and Savior face to face on Monday, August 27, 2018. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Blanche Harvey.


Phil loved his family and treasured his time with them even though it was not long enough. He was a loving husband to his wife and for the last seven years his caregiver, Helen Douglas Harvey. He loved his children and was always proud of them; his daughter, Laurie Cox and her husband, Daniel, of Little Rock, and sons, Grant Harvey of Fayetteville, AR, and Scott Harvey of White Hall, AR. The lights of his life were his grandchildren, Shawn Douglas Cox and Anna Kate Cox. He loved them fiercely, and they adored him. He is survived by his brothers, Ron Harvey and his wife, Judi, of Springdale, AR and Randy Harvey of White Hall, AR, as well as nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a host of extended family and faithful friends to remember his warm smile and kind words.


Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 30 at First Baptist Church Little Rock Chapel, 62 Pleasant Valley Drive, immediately followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 a.m.
