The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 Main St., is inviting the community to its annual Volunteer Night at 7 p.m. Friday, as a heartfelt “thank you” will be extended to those who have given above-and-beyond to their community by volunteering at the center.

Festivities will include a reader’s theater with some of the community’s favorite performers, a reception provided by the Art Krewe, and the presentation of the Catherine M. Bellamy, Margaret Spearman and the “Good Egg” awards.

The center is proud to announce the 2011 Catherine M. Bellamy Award for Performing Arts winners, Drew and Catherine Anne Atkinson.

The Atkinsons have been involved with the center for more than 10 years in many different aspects, both as a team and individually. The couple has two children, Allison and Andrew, who have been active at ASC as well.

Catherine Anne grew up attending plays at the Little Theater at the Civic Center Complex. Her first actual involvement with a production, however, was during her pregnancy with Allison. Asked to make angel wings for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” she went to International Paper to obtain a large, heavy roll of cardboard. The workers felt so sorry for her, they loaded it into her car themselves. Arriving home, her neighbors had a similar reaction, and unloaded it into the den. It took her and Drew two sets of cardboard wings to figure out how to keep them together.

It would take more than contrary angel’s wings to keep Catherine Anne away. Since then, in addition to helping backstage during numerous performances, she has been the stage manager and sound tech. She has been involved with “Razzle Dazzle”, served as treasurer of the Board of Trustees, and for more than 10 years, she has dutifully performed the responsibilities of acquisitions chair for “Potpourri”.

Drew has been no stranger to the workings of ASC himself. In addition to assisting Catherine Anne in her numerous volunteer works, he has been involved with set construction and backstage work for many summer musicals. Drew has even stepped onto the stage a few times himself. He could be seen in “South Pacific” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

“The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas thrives because individuals like Catherine Anne and Drew Atkinson devote so much of themselves to its programs and causes, and we are excited for this opportunity to honor them,” a spokesman said.
