The Arkansas Arts Center Foundation recently announced that it has received an American Art Renewal Fund grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.

The $168,000 grant is restricted to fund the positions of the curator of drawings and the curator of contemporary craft at the Arkansas Arts Center. The Henry Luce Foundation developed the American Art Renewal Fund to respond to the economic downturn and the current need to strengthen American art activities at the nation’s museums. This short-term initiative, offered through the American Art Program, provides support for the operating expenses related to American art. Thus, it is a departure from the traditional focus on research and scholarship and was in effect only through 2011.

Since its inception in 1982, the Henry Luce Foundation’s American Art Program has provided more than $140 million to support scholarly studies and awareness of American art at some 250 museums, universities and service organizations across the country and internationally.

“The Arkansas Arts Center is honored to have received a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation—one of the foremost philanthropic organizations in the United States,” said Todd Herman, Arkansas Arts Center executive director.

“This grant will enable the Arts Center to fill two vacant curatorial positions. I am grateful the Luce Foundation recognized the importance of the Arkansas Arts Center’s mission and collection by awarding us this grant. This funding is vital to our interpretation and display of a world-class collection of art and outreach to the community.”

Founded in 1960, the Arkansas Arts Center is an art museum with a children’s theatre and studio school. Its mission is to ensure that learning, inspiration and creative expression in the arts flourish throughout Arkansas, for people of all ages and backgrounds. The AAC realizes this mission by developing, preserving and exhibiting its outstanding permanent collection, offering a rich variety of art from other collections and presenting programs for the education and cultural benefit of the public.

The Arkansas Arts Center is located at 9th and Commerce at Little Rock. Admission is free.
