MONTICELLO — An evening of big band Christmas music will highlight performances by the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s three jazz ensembles Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the UAM Fine Arts Center.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Jazz Band I, UAM’s top jazz ensemble, will play arrangements of popular Christmas tunes performed by The Glenn Miller Band, The Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra, and the Count Basie Band. Gary Meggs, director of bands and head of the UAM jazz program, will direct Jazz Band I.

Jazz Band II, conducted by Les Pack, and Jazz Band III, with C.E. Askew on the baton, will also perform both traditional and contemporary big band music.

The UAM Jazz Band I and Jazz Combo I have been invited for the second year in a row to perform at the internationally renowned Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago in February, where they will compete with 30 other college jazz bands and combos from all over the U.S.
