The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Adult Education Department will offer free GED Arkansas High School Diploma weekend classes and required testing for three weekends in early 2012.

Classes are for persons in Jefferson County and the surrounding area who need and want to earn a high school diploma. Known as the GED Arkansas High School Diploma Blitz, all activities are scheduled to meet in the Adult Education Testing Center located at the UAPB Plaza, 2003 N. University Drive, Suite 2, just one half mile from the main campus.

Dates for the GED Blitz are Friday and Saturday for three weekends beginning January 20-21, 2012, and including the following weekends of January 27-28, and February 3-4, 2012. Friday sessions begin at 1 p.m.. Students who arrive by 3:30 p.m. will be able to complete the intake and Locator forms. Saturday sessions, which begin at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., will offer all necessary testing and paperwork for GED preparation. Time needed to pass tests will depend on the student. Once the applicant meets necessary GED scores, he or she will be given the pre-GED test. Students will need two complete days for all required forms and testing; therefore, the student is encouraged to attend any part or all of the days and dates listed.

Interested persons must be 18 or older (not currently enrolled in high school), must have a picture identification card such as a driverís license, and must have their Social Security number. GED Blitz activities include completion of the intake form, Locator testing, TABE testing, Pre-GED testing, faculty advisement for students, and any needed review of classroom material. Once the student has passed the pre GED test, the actual GED test will be offered through a recognized GED testing center within two or three weeks of the Blitz.

According to Linda Kittler, director of the UAPB Adult Education Department, program workers recognize that our community has many people who need a high school diploma and who cannot attend the regular program which is offered on Monday through Friday. Interested persons may attend any of the Blitz dates or may call 870-575-8202 for more information.

Persons interested in attending a regular schedule of classes are invited to visit the UAPB Adult Education Testing Center any Monday or Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., 1 p.m., or 5 p.m. for testing and enrollment information. Groups interested in having a guest speaker from the Adult Education program should contact Kittler at 870-575-8206.

Other classes offered free to the public include English as a Second Language and the Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE) Programs. These classes are also free to students 18 and older. Details: Call 870-575-8202 or visit Adult Education at the UAPB Plaza on University Avenue.
