Several local agencies are asking Pine Bluff area residents to participate in Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc., a non-profit agency.

Funds raised from the recycling of cellular phones are used to purchase pre-paid international calling cards. On average, Cell Phones for Soldiers distribute 12,000 calling cards each week to bases around the world, care package programs, deployment ceremonies and VA hospitals.

Area residents may donate their gently used cell phones at the sponsors’ locations, including:

• The National Center for Toxicological Research, 3900 NCTR Road, Jefferson.

• Economic Development Alliance for Jefferson County, 510 Main St.

• University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, ROTC Golden Lion Battalion, 1200 N. University Drive.

• Southeast Arkansas College, Workforce Development Center, 2505 W. 18th Ave.

“Our group is excited to be able to provide people in our region multiple locations where they can donate to this very worthy cause,” said Tom Powers, communications officer for NCTR. “We hope everyone in the region who got a new cell over the holidays, or has unused phones simply collecting dust will think of this program and join with us to provide free talk time to our brave service men and women protecting our freedom at home and abroad.”
