The Jefferson County Relay for Life kick-off rally will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henslee Conference Center of Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

The Jefferson County Relay for Life kick-off rally will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henslee Conference Center of Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the rally is where families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, company representatives or others can get together to begin the annual Relay For Life activities.

Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around a track to raise funds as well as honor survivors and those who died. Participants also light hundreds of luminaria.

Locally, Relay For Life is scheduled for May 4 at Watson Chapel High School. The cancer society invites the public to join the event. Nationally, Relay For Life will take place in more than 4,900 communities.

During Thursdayís rally, teams will also be preparing for a chili cook-off. Bowls of chili will be sold for $3 and will include a drink. Desserts will cost extra.
