Roadwork in McGehee will begin today and continue for about a month, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department officials.

The first job will be on North Fifth Street. It will extend from Willow Street to U.S. 278 (Holly Street). The second project will be on Thompson Street. The work will extend from Hemlock Street to U.S. 278 (Holly Street).

R. Thompson Inc. of Hamburg was awarded the contract at $239,473.08.

The project is funded through the State Aid City Streets Program, approved by lawmakers in 2011 and voters in 2012. The State Aid City Streets program provides $20 million annually from the state motor fuels tax to assist cities with projects selected by a nine-member panel of Arkansas mayors.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution when approaching and traveling through all highway work zones. Additional travel information can be found at www.ArkansasHighways.com.
