The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will hold its Fall 2011 Commencement exercises Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Johnson, Sr. Health, Physical Education and Recreation complex.

The commencement speaker will be Calvin E. Booker Sr., president of the UAPB/AM&N National Alumni Association. A 1979 UAPB graduate and Hamburg native, Booker was a member of the UAPB staff for 11 years as assistant to the Dean of Education and coordinator of Student Recruitment. In the late 1980s, Booker became the youngest person to be elected to the Pine Bluff City Council. He is currently corporate vice president of public affairs for the Southern Group of Waste Management Inc. in Atlanta, Ga., a company he joined in 1991 in Dallas. He is responsible for the organizational development and strategic implementation of governmental affairs, community relations and communications programs across 12 Southeastern states and Puerto Rico. Booker is also the chairman emeritus of the Corporate Round Table (the financial entity) of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.

He received his degree in education from UAPB and obtained his masterís degree in secondary education from Prairie View A&M. He and his wife Janetta, also a graduate of UAPB, and their son Calvin Booker Jr. are active members of the Atlanta community.
