JoAnn Phillips had been on the look out for purple martins to visit her bird house and Monday morning it happened.

Phillips said about 7:30 a.m. she saw the first one at the purple martin house at her home on Shannon Road in the Watson Chapel community.

For years, residents in the Pine Bluff area have reported seeing purple martins at the beginning of spring like weather.

While some people depend on the prediction of a ground hog to tell if spring is approaching, area residents watch out for the purple martin, a swallow that has long been known as the harbinger of spring.
