After deliberating nearly two and-a-half hours, a Jefferson County jury found a Pine Bluff man guilty in the shooting death of another man last year.

Tony Ray Boykins, 28, was convicted of first-degree murder in the July 27 shooting death of Brian K. Smith, 21, also of Pine Bluff.

Boykins had pleaded innocent and his attorneys claimed that witnesses to the shooting identified the wrong person as the shooter.

Smith was shot after an altercation at an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Maple Street and taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

After jury instructions and testimony from both families of Smith and Boykins, the jury of six women and six men began deliberating Boykins’ punishment.

The jury also decided that Boykins used a firearm in the commission of the crime, an enhancement which could add additional years to his sentence.
