Crews have begun ground work for the new Walgreens at the site of the former West 28th Plaza, 2503 W. 28th Ave.

The facility is expected to be 15,000 square feet with approximately 60 employees, according to Tony Rogers, a Dallas real estate developer. The store is scheduled to open Jan. 1, 2013, Rogers said.

According to Robert Tucker, chief of the Pine Bluff Inspection and Zoning Department, a permit was issued April 26 for demolition to begin at the site and work began June 6.

The former West 28th Plaza housed several local businesses including The University Shop, which has moved to The Pines mall; Mimi Nails, which is located at 2507 W. 28th Ave.; and Farmers Insurance, which is located at 2616 W. 28th Ave.

According to their website, Walgreens currently has 60 stores in Arkansas. The facilities offer store brand medicines and photo printing centers at some outlets.
