A Pine Bluff man was killed Sunday night in a fire at an apartment complex in the Dollarway area.

Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Lt. Harold Clark identified the victim as Robert Arnold, 55, who Clark said was from New Orleans and had been in Pine Bluff since being evacuated following Hurricane Katrina.

He had no family here and we were able to contact his family in New Orleans to notify them, Clark said.

Firefighters were sent to a reported fire at 1401 Cottonwood, Building 27, Apartment C at 7:32 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from Clark.

We know that the room of origin was the bedroom. The body was found in the bedroom on the bed, Clark said.

Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley said Chief Deputy Coroner David Westbrook pronounced Arnold dead at 8:17 p.m. and listed the cause of death as smoke inhalation.

Twelve firefighters were involved in battling the blaze at the one-story, brick apartment complex, the news release said.

The fire was extinguished at 9:34 p.m. There were no other injuries reported, and Clark said the adjacent apartment received only minor smoke damage.

Damage to the apartment where Arnold lived was estimated at $10,000, with a $5,000 estimate of damage for the contents of the apartment.

Clark said the apartment did have a smoke alarm but he was unsure if it was working.

Its a proven fact that smoke alarms work and for people who dont have one, they can contact us and we will come install one free of charge, Clark said. If they have one and are not sure its working, we can check it and put in fresh batteries if needed.

To contact the Fire Department about a smoke alarm, call 543-5150.

The death was the first fire related fatality in Pine Bluff since Nov. 20, 2011, when Daisy Evans, 62, died at Jefferson Regional Medical Center following a fire at 1601 Elm St.
