A Pine Bluff man who was reportedly acting suspiciously Saturday afternoon at the Pines Mall parking lot was arrested after police found items that were allegedly stolen from a vehicle.

During a court hearing Monday, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said Alvin Scates, 38, had a large rock in his right hand and was holding a cell phone and other items when police found him on the parking lot at about 5 p.m.

Detective Brad Vilches reported that when police searched Scates for officer safety, they found a car stereo inside his pants, a GPS device and a bottle of cologne.

Kizer said while police were talking to Scates, they were approached by a man who reported that his 1995 Ford had been broken into. The man identified the things police recovered from Scates as having been in his vehicle.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $25,000 bond for Scates, who Kizer said is on parole and has an extensive criminal history, after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with breaking or entering and misdemeanor theft of property.

Scates told the judge he would hire his own attorney and was instructed to come back to court at 9 a.m. April 23.
