One person was killed and another injured in an accident involving a live power line Wednesday morning near Wabbaseka.

David Nicholas Newman, 29, of McRae in White County was identified as the victim by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Major Lafayette Woods Jr. No identity was available for the injured man, who Woods said was treated and released by paramedics at the scene.

Two other employees with Highlines Construction Inc. of Louisiana were on the scene but were not injured, Woods said.

The group of workers were replacing utility poles. One had been cut down, and they were guiding it to the ground when the top of the pole struck a live wire, Woods said the witnesses reported. Newman was not wearing safety gloves and was electrocuted.

Woods said the other worker was in a bucket truck and also received a shock that was less serious.

Emergency personnel were called regarding the incident shortly before 10 a.m. to an area north of the Wabbaseka city limits along Brunetti Road, about a mile west of where it intersects with Wabbaseka Road.

Wabbaseka Police Chief DeShawn Bennett was first to arrive at the scene where he found Newman unresponsive and the injured worker awake but not entirely coherant, Woods said. Bennett administered emergency medical services until Emergency Ambulance Service Inc. arrived and transported Newman to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m.
