Acting on a tip that a Pine Bluff man was carrying a large quantity of suspected marijuana in his vehicle, a Tri-County Drug Task Force investigator and a Pine Bluff Police Vice and Narcotics officer stopped the vehicle Tuesday and seized approximately six pounds of the drug.

Sheriff’s Department Operations Commander Major Lafayette Woods Jr. said Jarvis Battles, 30, also had $2,414 in cash on his person when he was taken into custody.

Woods said task force officers received information that Battles was driving a gray Mercury Grand Marquis and Task Force Investigator Danny Fletcher and police Detective Keith Willoughby saw a vehicle matching that description in the area of East Sixth Avenue and Belmont Street.

After a traffic stop, Fletcher approached the vehicle and reported a pronounced odor of suspected marijuana coming from the vehicle’s interior, which gave investigators probable cause for a search.

Woods said a black backpack in the car contained approximately six pounds of suspected marijuana, packing material and other drug paraphernalia including a set of scales.

Battles was taken to the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center where he is being held with no bond on probable cause of possession of a controlled substance marijuana with purpose to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia pending an expected appearance Thursday in Jefferson County District Court.
