One person was killed and another injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Mill Road just off U.S. 63 north in Jefferson County.

The driver of a log truck, Christopher Cornett, 35, of Malvern, was killed after the truck left the road and hit a tree, causing the load to shift and a log to go through the back cab of the truck, striking Cornett in the back, Sheriffs Department Major Lafayette Woods Jr. said.

Cornett was pronounced dead at 2:02 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Kim Phillips, according to Coroner Chad Kelley.

The driver of a tanker truck, Ronald Bates, 54, of Pine Bluff, was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center but his injuries were believed to be non-life threatening, Woods said.

The accident was reported at about 1:40 p.m. and involved the empty tanker and the loaded log truck that was headed toward Evergreen Packaging.

The investigation by Sgt. Andy Hoots and Cpl. Kevin Freeman indicated the tanker was northbound on Mill Road and the log truck was southbound, and turning into a curve when the log truck crossed the center line.

To avoid a head-on collision, Woods said the log truck ran off the roadway, striking the tree.

Even though the tanker truck was carrying placards indicating it was empty, Woods said personnel from the Office of Emergency Management were called to the scene to confirm that there were no hazardous materials involved.

Woods said there was a small liquid spill after the accident but that was gasoline and motor oil from the vehicles.
