A Jefferson County woman who was stabbed to death last week was pregnant, according to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Sheriff’s Department Major Lafayette Woods Jr., said Mendi Catherine Bell, 37, was “11 or 12 weeks pregnant,” when she was pronounced dead on arrival at Jefferson Regional Medical Center on Jan. 19.

Bell’s husband, George Cage, 31, was arrested and is being held without bond on one count of capital murder stemming from Bell’s death.

Prosecutors are expected to file a second count of capital murder against Cage as a result of the death of the unborn child.

If convicted of capital murder, Cage would be sentenced to death by lethal injection or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Cage’s next court appearance is scheduled for March.

The slaying was the second of the year in Jefferson County and the first outside the Pine Bluff city limits.
